Butler's Pantry (First Floor)

The Butler’s Pantry served as a pivotal staging area for culinary preparations before food was presented in the dining room. It functioned as a hub for organizing and maintaining the culinary accoutrements essential to the household's fine dining experiences. Alongside the countertops, where food was arranged, a warming oven at the east end of the room ensured that dishes maintained their optimal temperature.

The daily china, crystal, and silver were kept in this pantry, washed and ready for use. Today, these cabinets hold the many teacups and saucers that we use for our popular afternoon teas. Historically, the safe in the hallway provided secure storage for the fine silver and large serving pieces, under the vigilant oversight of the butler.

Noteworthy is the original gasolier light fixture suspended above the table—a testament to the house's evolution. Originally configured solely for gas illumination, the residence underwent significant renovations between 1905 and 1909, transitioning to an electrically powered system facilitated by the nearby Haskell & Barker factory.

The Barker Mansion was also outfitted with a call box system reminiscent of those employed at iconic estates across the country. One of its annunciators was located here in the Butler’s Pantry. It registered rings from the front door, the garden door, and the push buttons in the library and drawing room. If someone rang at the exterior doors or the family pushed a button in one of the designated rooms, a member of staff would be alerted.

Beyond the west side door lies the pastry kitchen, a realm dedicated to the art of confectionery. Here, a marble countertop serves as an indispensable tool for pastry preparation, ensuring optimal coolness for dough and pastry during the delicate process of rolling and shaping.

Complementing the functionality of the Butler's Pantry are its custom crafted features. The zinc sinks, chosen for their gentleness on delicate china, underscore the meticulous care taken in culinary operations. Meanwhile, the cupboard doors, ingeniously designed with ball bearings, retain their smooth operation even after a century, a testament to enduring craftsmanship.
