Old Master Bedroom (Second Floor)

Welcome to the heart of history within the Barker Mansion! You are standing in the original master bedroom when the first generation of Barkers moved to 631 Washington Street in 1857. Through the decades, this room witnessed changes reflective of the family's evolving needs and aspirations.

At the outset, this room served as the private sanctuary for the senior John Barker and Cordelia until Chicago became their permanent residence. Here, they would have found moments of tranquility amid the burgeoning activity of The Haskell & Barker Car Company and a growing Michigan City. Later, during the tenure of their son John H. and his wife Katherine, this space underwent significant changes.

During the mansion’s expansion from 1905-1909, architect Frederick Perkins designed a master suite in the newly constructed wing, leading to the redecoration of this room as "The Peacock Room,” with a characteristic feather motif and palette. A hookup to the central vacuum system installed throughout the mansion can be found directly to the lower left as you enter the room.

The Peacock Room would next function as a bedroom for the governess of John H. and Katherine’s daughter Catherine. She later repurposed it as a guest room. It is thought that the ensuite bathroom was added during the 1880s. Now, during the ongoing restoration of the Barker Mansion, this room has come full circle, refurbished to resume its initial role as the senior Barkers’ bedroom.

The walnut bedroom set from the post-Civil War era takes center stage, featuring a full-size bed and a drop-well dresser adorned with a marble top. The set showcases intricately carved details with burl panels and brass hardware. The drawers with hand-cut dovetail joints reflect similarly fine craftsmanship. Additionally, brass wall sconces with etched glass shades replicate the gas lighting of the time.

Thanks to extensive research, the expertise of talented artisans, and steadfast patience, the "Old Master Bedroom" once again echoes the comfortable retreat where the first Barker family members found rest each night.
